The Political Compass

golden-compass.jpg

Politics ain't Golden like the Compass, but there is a political compass that will tell you where you sit on the philosophical spectrum, politically speaking.

Me? I'm halfway across the X-axis — to the right, of course. Which means, according to their calculations, that I have no candidates that I like. There are sucker questions meant to push you one way (authoritarian) or the other (anything-goes libertarian), so beware and take the test with a grain of salt.

But definitely report where you sit.

Right on the X axis, slightly up on the y. About where John Majors is. Good company

I think I may be exactly where Brad is on the social libertarian/authoritarian scale. For some reason, though, I might be ever so slightly to his left on economics. Strange.

In the little graph I tried to draw, the vertical center line I tried to draw came out aligned left instead of centered. So, my x is a bit skewed looking. I ain't no ascii artist. The numbers will have to speak for themselves.

I have to say I am suspicious of the site's built-in bias based on their placement of Maggie Thatcher and "W".

I share those suspicions, James. According to the chart, I am in the political wilderness - when I'd think Maggie and I would be sharing tea.

Though considering W's "compassionate conservatism" -- read: big government with a Republican face -- it makes sense that there is considerable distance between us.

Economic Left/Right: 1.62
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -0.87

This test can't fully cope with people such as myself, who believe in the fallen nature of man and the imperfect ability of politics to rectify the problems of the world. For instance, my answer to "The most important thing for children to learn is to accept discipline." was "disagree", as to me, the most important thing for my children is to come to an understanding of God's grace and love for them. This skews the results somewhat. And whether or not my child's school instills religious values matters little to me if I don't instill those values first.

Still, I usually place center/right in most any political quiz I take, so there is some value in this one, I guess.

Like usual, I'm right/libertarian. My scores were:
Economic Left/Right: 4.38
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -1.64

(I'm assuming this makes me better than Exurban Kevin somehow, right?)

Basically if Angela Merkel mated with Steve Forbes, I would be their love child. Only much, much better looking.
