Here are some reasons why.
Craig T. Nelson, an affable fellow and great sit-com actor — as proven from his time on the underrated classic "Coach" — was a guest on Glenn Beck's Fox program the other day. He's had it with the way California has been run. It's not a state anymore, he said, but a hedge fund. He doesn't want to be a part-owner of GM. He also doesn't want to pay income taxes to California anymore. And he's not moving. He's just refusing to pay.
Beck asked Nelson when was the last time he read "Common Sense" by Thomas Paine. "Two years ago," was Nelson's reply. Not bad, for a Hollywood actor.
He even pulled out a copy of the Declaration of Independence that he had in his pocket and read a bit from it. Again. Not bad. Kind of impressive, actually.
Here's an actor who is thinking about these issues seriously — and is willing to take the consequences of his actions (at least he says he is) by going to jail for not paying his state income tax.
Nice to see that all the radical thought in Hollywood isn't chasing lefty dreams. Maybe all that subversive anti-left stuff in "The Incredibles" sunk in.

Craig T. Nelson for Assembly or State Senate
Nelson argues, with some reason, that "we are no longer represented." We are, in some pro forma way. We live in districts gerrymandered by politicians to maximize votes and ensure one party or the other holds a seat. We have state senators and state assemblymen who stand for office every two or four years. A few understand their responsibilities. Most don't. They represent interests and special constituencies.
I believe Nelson lives in or around Beverly Hills. That would be State Senate District 23, currently "represented" by Fran Pavley, a Democrat. On the Assembly side, that would be District 42, currently "represented" by Mike Feuer, also a Democrat. Nelson should run -- from prison, if necessary. Some of what he says make sense. Some of what he says ought to make sense to Democrats. He should run as a Democrat, because he has no chance of making any headway as a Republican.
Craig T. Nelson, candidate
Ben writes:
Why is that? Because he seems to have a distaste for defunding "teachers" — not realizing, of course, that he is defending the corrupt, union-controlled status quo? I must say, that soured me on him, but just a bit. I think he needs some education on California's (and the nation's) dysfunctional education monopoly. He'd come around.
Surely, as you say, Nelson would have hard sledding as a Republican candidate in Hollywood/Beverly Hills/Santa Monica or wherever he lives (perhaps even Bel Air). But he has no future as a Democrat in California, at least not until we release the gerrymander grip. Everything he talked about has long been purged from the Democratic Party, not just in California, but (mostly) in the nation at-large.
Re: Candidate Nelson
The only credible threat he could pose to the Democrats would be as a primary challenger, especially in those districts, where the general election is essentially settled in the primary. It's simple math. And, yeah, the gist of his complaints seem to be that the state is cutting the wrong programs, not that the state should or shouldn't be spending as much as it does. Education is important, and many teachers and schools struggle. But there can be no argument that we spend too much on education to pay for an army of bureaucrats.
Comments on Nelson
Well, this post has attracted 8 comments at Reddit, a record for me. Most of them are obnoxious (which makes me wonder why Reedit seems dominated by lefty/liberal readers). Do conservatives gather at another post-promotion site?
Anyway, enjoy:
C'mon, Zaius; Let's Register Democratic (Everyone Should!)
My solution to California and the USA's problem(s)? EVERYONE (without regard to your political core beliefs) REGISTER DEMOCRAT.
Ah, I grow wistful just thinking what that would do to the political system... the key, of course, is for no one to actually change their political beliefs, but to all appropriate the identical label.

Like Nelson's not going to pay his taxes!
Yeah, maybe Lord Nelson.
When I saw the initial guest appearance last week sometime, the whole, shall I say, episode seemed uncomfortable. I'm not going to bash a TV series which I never watched (oh, maybe once or twice). Who can remember? It was like watching two guys trying to bond, but somehow failing at some mutual respect level. Nelson seemed only marginally informed on anything, though he was trying to get up to speed. And his taxes stuff was totally unconvincing (made me wince). I'll eat my hat and shoes when he gets nailed for evasion.
But so what? I don't dislike the guy; kinda you normal average citizen.
Wry Mouth: as much as I like the evil genius behind your registration suggestions; well, for me, it is a 'no can do'; a psychological impossibility. I would consider everyone registering Communist, or Libertarian, or Green, or what not.
Well o.k. "john 2000"... if that *is* your real name...
... my pappy was a JFK Democrat, back when there was such a thing, do I wanted to to that, but I will modify my proposal to either Peace and Freedom Party, Green Party, or Bull Moose Party? I'd suggest Libertarian, but they are probably in a nice "growth" mode right now that I don't want to spoil...
Then again, for my evil plan to work, all Libertarians would have to re-register as well... it's got to be EVERY REGISTERED VOTER. Let's set a deadline of Sept. 2010, shall we? That will *really* mess up the Congressional races! :D
