Here are some reasons why.
Hypothetical question - and this is not an unrealistic possibility:
IF the "War on Terror" really does continue for several more decades and...
IF the pool of "volunteer" soldiers in our military dries up...
Do you support reinstating the draft?

re: Question for fans of Bush and the "War"
This is ridiculous, and you should be ashamed for saying this. I expect it from a moonbat like Howard Dean, who is out on the campaign trail spouting the same thing, but a libertarian should know better. Your question is predicated on the idea that there is no "war," which we've argued before. But put that aside--what if there was a war--a real one, and an important one? Would you support the draft then? I wouldn't, and no self respecting libertarian would. Milton Friedman and others have argued persuasively that a draft is never justified, nor needed (if a nation is going to fight a war, it should have enough willing volunteers, and a volunteer army is a better one)--are you saying you disagree with them?
re: Question for fans of Bush and the "War"
On the contrary, I would never support any kind of draft or mandatory national service requirement, ever. But I think if you take a look at the two (so far) trackback entries we've received, you'll understand why I asked the question. Both of them answer the question with some version of "yes", which is troubling to me.
I do regret failing to include John Kerry in the question somehow, because I think a Democratic administration would be similarly likely to favor conscription, although their public advocacy of the draft would probably have more of a race/class-envy element to it.
At any rate, I think this is a question we should be discussing now, while it still seems "ridiculous" - because I think it very likely, as this war wears on, that recruitment will become an increasing problem. When there aren't enough soldiers, the instinct of government is to conscript them. How many of the United States major wars were manned without it?
